T-minus 24 hours

Welcome to Artificial Swedener's inaugural post. My plan is to write a little each day about the interesting people, sights, tastes and sounds I encounter during my six-month odyssey in Sweden.

A little background: For reasons inexplicable to me (I'm awesome?) I've been asked to take a six-month break from my job at New York-based Popular Science to go to Sweden and work for the corporate publishing honchos who purchased our magazine, and 17 others, a year ago.

I just got married in June, and while my new husband is supportive of my journey abroad, he won't be joining me. So this will be a blog about how I navigate a new country, an unfamiliar language and a foreign work culture—solo.

I'll post photos and leave the comments open for your advice, ribbing, bitch-slaps, etc.

Right now I'm in New York, where I'm spending a day in the PopSci office and an evening sharing goodbye drinks with friends. My trip begins in earnest tomorrow... and I have the feeling it's going to be a wild ride.

I'm her husband, and I'm very excited for Megan and supportive of this whole endeavor. But I'm hoping everyone else will make her feel just guilty enough about being away from me that she brings me back tons of presents. So let the ribbing commence!

I'm her new mother-in-law and her whole life leaves me in awe. So while I'm busy moving to New Mexico I'll be checking the blog daily.

Ha, Artificial Swedener, too cute. I'm her new sister-in-law, and I'm so excited for this new adventure. Although, I do feel sorry for my brother. He waited so long for such a great lady and now he's all alone again. Many presents are in order. By the way, your hair looks adorable. I wish I could have cut it for you.

I'm her mom....and I didn't know she got her hair cut until I looked at the picture here! Have fun and yes...bring John presents! Love you and good luck!

I'm her aunt, and having been the spouse left behind for a 7 month journey solo (if living on a ship with 6,000 other people counts as solo in any regard) I can say from experience that presents are definitely recommended. The number of presents is reversely proportional to the guilt felt by the journeying spouse. Love you, Megan. My Swedish friend said take a sun lamp with you. Stay warm and happy.

This is Sharon (friend of her parents Gary and Maggie and of course Megan) Hair cut looks good. Bring lots of presents for everybody. Yes I'm greedy. Have a great time and enjoy the experience. Six months will go by fast. Before you know it you will be back in John (Bill) arms. Have fun and stay safe. Lots of love

Sharon
Hey Penny when are you moving to New Mexico?

I am another friend of the bride's parents and I am impressed that the old ladies, Maggie (Megan's mom) and Sharon figured out how to blog. Enjoy the high life while you can, Megan. I hope you did not infest Sweden with bed bugs and I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight as SC how there own version of large, ugly bugs. They are roaches but the gentile folks of the south call the Palmetto bugs...sounds nice, right? Not so much. Have a great trip.
